I recently took interest in contestant Chris Sligh because he wasn’t a conventional choice of idol. A chubby guy with a fro and an interest in making David Hasselhoff cry, I watched his performances to see how long he would last. Alas, last week he was removed from the program. Normally I would accept and forget this event if not for one thing: Sanjaya Malakar.

Sanjaya has been a contestant who stood out to me because, while some American Idol contestants are lacking some natural singing ability, he possesses none. I’m talking the worst I’ve ever seen, can’t keep key or tune, has no range, literally no musical ability whatsoever. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised to find he was tone deaf. As contestants get voted off each week, and Sanjaya remains my anger grows. My mother and I have an open yelling session at the television when he doesn’t get voted off each week.
Now, with Chris’s removal and the talent less nitwit remaining, I expressed my anger to my best friend. She explained that the reason for Sanjaya’s successful stint on Idol is due to a greater scheme. Apparently radio host Howard Stern has been advocating his listeners to vote for Sanjaya as a means to bring down Idol, and he isn’t the only one. In search for proof of Howard Stern’s Idol plan, I discovered “Vote for the Worst” a website that is dedicated solely to keeping the most ridiculous contestants on idol for as long as possible. They boast their role in keeping former contestants like Kevin Covas and last year’s winner, Taylor Hicks on air. So far American Idol has not been able to stop the site.
Creators of the website claim that since American Idol spends so much time and takes so much enjoyment from the misfortune of their more ridiculous auditionees, that they are merely taking the enjoyment to the next level. Although I find their reasoning most humourous, I find myself on the fence of this whole scheme. I do think some of the people who have graced the idol stage have talent. Kelly Clarkson’s vocals were undeniable to anyone, fan of the show or not. However, I dislike Sanjaya and I can’t support him spending one more second on television no matter what the reason. His mere presence angers me. But his spot on the show proves “Vote for the Worst” is working, it’s a tough one to call.
